On February 9, as a part of the 2010 White House Music Series, the
President and First Lady hosted “In Performance at the White House: A
Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement” - a concert
celebrating Black History month. Participants included Righteous Babe
Records’ artist Toshi Reagon, as well as Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon,
Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the
Howard University Choir and many more. Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman,
Queen Latifah and Joanne Woodward were guest speakers for this concert
which featured songs from the Civil Rights Movement as well as readings
from famous Civil Rights speeches and writings.
The concert will be televised tonight, February 11th at 8:00 p.m. ET
on public broadcasting stations nationwide as part of WETA Washington,
D.C.’s “In Performance at the White House” series. Check your local PBS listings for air times in your town.
NPR has also produced a
one-hour concert special from this event for broadcast nationwide on
member stations throughout the month, beginning February 12th.
